History of the Friends 1991-2011: Celebrating 20 years of supporting WRR!
|
Dallas residents have been enjoying WRR for longer than most of us can remember. In fact, WRR holds the distinction of being the oldest radio station west of the Mississippi. When the City of Dallas considered selling the station in the early 1990s, however, the future didn’t seem as bright.
Concerned that listeners might lose WRR, many business and cultural leaders joined together to support the station and convince the city to retain ownership. They formed a board of directors, elected officers and incorporated as FRIENDS OF WRR in August of 1990. The IRS granted them tax-exempt status in February 1991 and the group formally announced its formation in April 1991.
Due in large part to the Friends’ efforts, Dallas City Council members decided not to sell the station and reaffirmed their belief that WRR would “be retained in the ownership of the City of Dallas for the benefit and enjoyment of its citizens.”
The Friends’ founders strongly believed in protecting and ensuring the future of one of the Metroplex’s greatest cultural assets. We applaud their efforts and continue their mission.
