As you may know, Fabio Luisi will be the newest Music Director of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra in 2019. He will be building on the work and vision of those who led the DSO in years prior. This is an exciting time of reflection and preparation for the Dallas classical music community. We are so grateful for the talent and vision of Jaap Van Zweden, Andrew Litton, and Eduardo Mata. The Friends of WRR would like to dedicate its 2019 thank-you gifts to these three most recent DSO Music Directors.

Dvořák’s Symphony No. 9 “From the New World” CD.

Jaap van Zweden leads the Dallas Symphony Orchestra on this live recording of Dvořák's love letter to America, the New World Symphony; music that captures the energy, exuberance, and promise of a great nation. Recorded in the highly acclaimed acoustics of the Meyerson Symphony Center's Eugene McDermott Concert Hall, this is a sonically stunning version of one of the most popular symphonies ever composed, expertly interpreted by the DSO. Van Zweden was named Musical America’s Conductor of the Year Award in 2012 in recognition of his critically acclaimed work.

Rachmaninov’s The Piano Concertos & Paganini Rhapsody, 2-CD set.

In Andrew Litton, the DSO offers a conductor who adores Rachmaninov and understands the works from a pianist’s perspective, an orchestra with a glorious and old-fashioned string sound of the kind with which the composer would be familiar, a hall that is one of the best in the world, and let’s not forget Stephen Hough who has already won two Gramophone ‘Record of the Year’ accolades for his concerto recordings.

Apart from the Paganini Rhapsody, recorded after a concert performance, these are live recordings. Over a period of eighteen days eleven concerts were given, with each concerto being played several times. From these Hyperion has pieced together an ‘ideal’ performance—free of coughs, noises and the few musical mishaps which occurred, but still capturing the excitement of what was, by common consent, a sensational series of concerts.

Dallas Symphony Orchestra, The Eduardo Mata Years, 6-CD set.

Sono Luminus is proud to announce this remastered 6-CD box set of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra’s recordings under the direction of Maestro Eduardo Mata.

This set features some of the most electric and engaging symphonic works by Prokofiev, Stravinsky, Shostakovich, Bernstein, Copland, Harris, Chausson, Ibert, and Respighi. The music was recorded at the Morton Meyerson Symphony Center between 1991 and 1993 by one of the country’s premiere orchestras and conducted by one of the world’s most preeminent conductors, who played such a crucial role in the growth and development of the orchestra.

These recordings represent a vibrant celebration of Mata’s life and work with this orchestra.
